Mark Your Calendars

It is official. For better or worse, Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed into law moving the state Primary to February 5, 2008.

Illinois is the fifth largest state in the country. The people who live here deserve to play a bigger role in deciding who the presidential candidates will be, Blagojevich said in a statement.

The move was orchestrated by the state's Democratic leadership in an effort to aid home-state U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's bid for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

But with about 20 states in the Feb. 5 running--a date now being dubbed Super Duper Tuesday -- Obama's rivals are expected to use Illinois as a fundraising ATM rather than a campaign destination for a major delegate victory. (Chicago Tribune, June 20, 2007

While Senator Obama is not the best candidate for the Oval Office, it is nice to see a Democratic challenger running for something. Petitions will be available in September -- in TWO months. There are too many congressional districts in Illinois without Democrats challenging Republican incumbents. Dan Seals has finally made his announcement for IL-10. Democrats still need someone to challenge in IL-11, IL-15, and IL-19. Neither of the Republican incumbents should have won in 2006. Constituents deserve better.

Ron McBride of WeDemocrats reminded everyone in his
letter to the editor that Democracy must return to this Republic:
No more games, no more pork-barrel projects, and here in IL-19 we have no intention of letting Rep. John Shimkus play follow the leader and give President Bush what he wants, each and every time a vote reaches the House floor.
The time to announce a congressional candidacy is yesterday!!
